Ubuntu University of Tanzania (UUT) is an emerging African university founded on the conviction that higher education should contribute not only to knowledge and professional advancement, but also to the flourishing of people, communities and society.
Rooted in the African philosophy of Ubuntu, UUT understands education as fundamentally relational: knowledge acquires its fullest meaning when it strengthens human dignity, expands human capabilities, nurtures responsible relationships and contributes to the common good.
UUT is being developed as a graduate- and research-driven university, bringing together advanced learning, interdisciplinary research, intellectual dialogue and engagement with the complex challenges facing Africa and the wider world.
UUT is African in its intellectual location and global in its horizon. It seeks to engage seriously with African knowledge, experiences and development realities while participating confidently in international scholarship and scientific inquiry.
The University therefore provides a space in which African intellectual traditions can encounter contemporary science, technology and global knowledge in the search for solutions that are academically rigorous, ethically grounded and socially meaningful.
From Knowledge to Human Flourishing
At Ubuntu University of Tanzania, knowledge is not an end in itself. It should expand human capability, deepen our responsibility to one another, help people pursue meaningful lives, and create the conditions in which individuals, communities and societies can flourish.
Our philosophy connects five ideas: Knowledge → Human Capability → Ubuntu → Meaningful Life → Human Flourishing. Knowledge opens possibilities. Human capability enables people to act upon them. Ubuntu grounds those possibilities in dignity, relationships and responsibility to others. Meaningful life gives human action purpose and direction. Human flourishing represents the wider horizon: people and communities living well, with dignity, agency, wellbeing, belonging and opportunity.
Our Vision
To be a leading African university advancing Ubuntu, meaningful lives and human flourishing through knowledge.
Our Mission
To generate transformative knowledge, develop human capability and connect research, learning and practice to the challenges of society, guided by Ubuntu and the pursuit of meaningful lives and human flourishing.
Research, Knowledge and Transformation
Research is central to UUT’s identity. Through graduate research, specialised scholarship, scholarly publications, academic programmes and collaboration, the University seeks to generate knowledge that engages significant questions confronting people, institutions and societies.
UUT aspires to be more than a place where existing knowledge is transmitted. It seeks to be a community in which knowledge is created, interrogated, shared and translated into possibilities for individual and societal transformation. Knowledge matters not merely because it expands what humanity knows, but because it can expand what human beings and societies are capable of becoming.
The Ubuntu Difference
Ubuntu provides UUT with a relational understanding of human existence. It begins from the recognition that human beings become and flourish through relationships with others and therefore that knowledge, leadership and development carry responsibilities beyond the individual.
At UUT, Ubuntu means that education should deepen human dignity, reciprocity and responsibility. Innovation should serve rather than diminish humanity. Leadership should recognise obligations to others. Development should strengthen rather than erode the social and ecological relationships upon which life depends. The question is therefore not only what can knowledge enable us to do?, but also what should we do with knowledge in relation to others?
The Meaningful Life
UUT understands education as more than preparation for employment, credentials or material advancement. Human beings also seek purpose, belonging, contribution and a sense that their lives matter. A university concerned with the meaningful life must therefore engage not only with what people can have or do, but also with who they can become and what makes their lives worth living.
This orientation places purpose alongside capability. Knowledge should help people understand themselves and their world, exercise agency, develop their capabilities, contribute to others and pursue lives they have reason to value. Education thus becomes not merely preparation for making a living, but part of learning how to live meaningfully.
Human Flourishing
Human flourishing extends the concern with meaningful lives from individuals to the conditions within which people, communities and societies can live well. It encompasses human capability, dignity, wellbeing, agency, relationships, opportunity and the social, institutional and ecological conditions necessary for people to realise their potential.
For UUT, therefore, flourishing cannot be reduced to economic growth, income, technological advancement or individual success. These may contribute to a good society, but they are means rather than ultimate ends. Research, education, leadership and innovation should ultimately be assessed by whether they enlarge human possibilities while sustaining the social and ecological foundations upon which those possibilities depend.
Welcome to Ubuntu University of Tanzania whose knowledge expands capability, Ubuntu connects us, meaning gives life direction., and human flourishing gives development its purpose — a university rooted in Africa, connected to the world, and committed to knowledge in the service of humanity.
